Burger Lovers Rejoice! Fan Favorite Au Cheval Opens in NYC

While there is no lack of great burgers in New York (Shake Shack and Minetta Tavern come to mind), there’s always room and demand for more good food here. So needless to say, Au Cheval Diner – a Chicago restaurant that is often cited as serving up the best burgers in the country – received a very warm welcome when it opened its first New York outpost last week at 33 Cortlandt Alley in Tribeca.

Like all great things in life, this one does have a catch; the restaurant attracted rather lengthy lines when it opened and reports have been coming in that people are waiting up to three hours to get their hands on the famous salty meat. So is it worth it?

Well, a true burger snob would say absolutely yes; Au Cheval’s single cheeseburger (which actually has two patties – the double has three!) was named the best burger in the country by Bon Appetit in 2012, and based on the amount of excitement the new restaurant opening has generated, it continues to stand tall in the rankings.

Of course – like everything else – you’ll pay more for a burger in the New York location than you will in Chicago – $19.50 here, versus $12.95 there. But in true New York fashion, that price discrepancy hasn’t stopped the crowds from lining up to taste it and the other dishes on offer like the 32 oz porterhouse with foie gras and roasted apples ($49.95) or throwback cocktails like the Oaxacan Old Fashioned (which was once served at Death & Co in 2007 and consists of lunazul tequila, del maguey vida mezcal, bitters, $15.95).

Go for the bragging rights, but stay for the food, which may be one of the few hyped up restaurants out there that is really worth it.
